Learning in Year 1

Learning In Year 1 – PREP/1
What a fantastic start to the year the students have had in Year 1!
They have really enjoyed being the older members of the class and have relished in
their new roles of being helpers and skill demonstrators. They have really started to
sprout in all areas (must have been those snow pea sprouts we have been growing
and eating during science lessons!)
The beginning of grade one has been a case of exciting ‘first times’ in the Prep/1 classroom. First time to have their very own desk. First time to have their own pencil cases and stationary to look after. First time to be role models for younger students in the school. I can honestly say they have accepted challenges with open arms (even if it is tiring at times) and as a result have really blossomed.
In the Prep/1 classroom, the students learn in many different ways.
This term they have practised their spelling by using playdough to make words, matching words, playing memory, watching clips on the interactive whiteboard, playing sight words games on the iPad, doing Kung Fu (where we use our arms and bodies to remember the words), tracing words on whiteboards, writing sounds on show-me boards, doing word sorts and completing various activities in their exercise books.
During Maths lessons the students participated in hands on activities using many different objects to help them deepen their mathematical understanding. They have used their desks, the floor and the verandah areas to complete their tasks. On Fridays, they get excited when they visit the computer lab to log onto Mathletics!
During reading sessions, the students participate in small groups to read a text and complete different activities. They also love using the ‘Reading Eggs’ interactive program on the classroom computers which is helping them improve their skills. Shown below are Taaj and Mhirrakye who recently read their book about how to make boats, cars and planes to the Prep students. The Preppies then used the steps they told them about, to design and make their own vehicles.
We can’t wait to see what Term 2 brings!
