Year 1-
The Busy Bees

Wow! What a busy term year 1s are having!  We really do live up to our name “The Busy Bees”.

This term in Science the children have been investigating habitats.   In this unit students have made links between external features of living things and the environment where they are found. We have also explored a range of habitats and consider the differences between healthy and unhealthy habitats.  The children will soon be able to make recommendations on how to improve a habitat by finding ways to make it healthier.

In Maths we have been collecting and representing data, exploring chance events and investigating teen numbers.  Maths has been very hands on this term and the children look forward to doing their daily maths warm up.  At the moment we are busily preparing for our maths investigation ‘My Favourite Teen Number’.

‘How Stories Work’ is our current year 1 English unit.  Each week the children and I study the features of a story book.  The children identify the beginning, middle and end of a story, make personal connections to each story, compare one story to another and share their opinions of characters.   This unit is enjoyable to teach and from the responses I am getting from the children it is an enjoyable experience for them also.

History this term has been a wonderful exploration into significant past events.
The children have been busy preparing and collecting items for their memory boxes.  We are currently midway through our assessment and I am enjoying listening to the children’s recollections of past events and looking at the sources that they have collected.  Thanks must go to all Year 1 families for their support during this unit. Your assistance has made this project a success.

What a fabulous introduction to teaching at Meringandan State School.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank the school community for making me feel welcome.
