Year 5 News

4/04/2014
I would like to congratulate the year 5s for being a wonderful class and for welcoming me to Meringandan State School. The class has worked very hard this term and done an excellent job of demonstrating our schools BEST expectations. Well done!
In English the students have been busy exploring fantasy novels and have had a lot of fun analysing characters, reading fantasy stories and writing their own beginning chapter of a fantasy novel.
Our fantasy theme was also explored in our art unit called ‘Dragon Dreams’. Students used different techniques to sketch, paint and collage dragons and finished the unit by making a very creative clay sculpture.
Through science the students have learned all about animal and plant adaptations and enjoyed an excellent day with the staff, from Amaroo, at Peacehaven Park in Highfields.
History has seen the students examine what daily life was like for convicts and free settlers in the 1800s. Students created a poster inviting free settlers to Australia and wrote a historical narrative, in the role of a free settler.
In Maths students have learnt different strategies for solving multiplication and division problems, had fun with fractions and explored chance and data (some students created excellent ‘Dot Plot’ graphs, at home, using ‘Word’ on their computer).
Overall it has been a very busy and productive term. The students have all worked very hard and all have been a pleasure to teach.
