Years 3 News

First term has certainly zoomed by with everyone working with best effort and attitude to challenge themselves to achieve their best in all that they attempt.

English: After improving their range of vocabulary and knowledge of language features during our Persuasive Writing unit, students are now applying that knowledge to narratives.  We are currently reading the novel “Matty Forever” by Elizabeth Fensham. While enjoying the friendship between Matty and Bill, students are learning to analyse characters and are discovering how the author makes careful choices with vocabulary and language features to develop characters.  Reading has been a major focus this term and thank you to any parents who have been able to listen to students read aloud.  Turn up on any Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and there will always be students ready to read to you!

Maths:  Multiplication facts are beginning! Students have worked enthusiastically to manipulate materials to represent these facts in groups and rows and are practising their recall of this new work. We are also particularly focussing on using a variety of strategies to solve 2 digit addition and subtraction problems. Students are working on improving their fluency at telling the time to 5 minute intervals.  This is an area which you can help reinforce at home by often stopping to discuss the time with your child. Letting your child use coins to make a given amount or to calculate a total is also very beneficial to their learning.

History:  After a term of learning about Celebrations and Commemorations, we are now particularly focussing on ANZAC Day. Students used a variety of sources to locate information and are developing note-taking skills. They are now ready to communicate their knowledge and understanding of this special day and are in process of writing a historical narrative.

Science:  We enjoyed our excursion to Amaroo Environmental Education Centre last week and appreciated the opportunity to consolidate our learning about Living and Non-living.  During our investigations we discovered that ants’ favourite people food is bread! We have also been comparing different environments within our school and Mr Lever certainly has the vegie patch looking full of life!

The Arts & Health:  In visual art we are exploring the use of colour to express feelings in portraits and landscapes. In Health, students have developed their own Healthy Lifestyle Plan demonstrating plenty of ideas on how to keep themselves fit and healthy.
